In our case, that location is the software stack that rides on top of a few standard Linux distributions: A portable control plane that can be run on hosts and routers, anywhere in the fabric, and provides us with the ability to separate hardware scaling from software features. Building a simple fabric, however, does not remove the complexity entirely it simply moves it to another location in the network. This single-SKU data center enables us to move away from the complexity of large chassis-based boxes to a simple singular module that is repeatable and can be increased in quantity as we scale out. We use one hardware design, a 3.2 Tbps pizza-box switch, as the building block for all different tiers of our leaf-and-spine topology that operate on top of one unified software stack. In our recent blog post about Project Altair, we explained our move to a single-SKU data center model, specifically based on the Falco open-switch platform. To accomplish these goals, we are disaggregating our network, separating the hardware and software in a way that allows us to modify and manage the network without intrusive downtime, and moving to a software-driven network architecture. Programmability brings benefits like being able to prioritize traffic distribution, load-balancing, or security posture when needed, on-demand with minimal effort, and also increases agility and responsiveness in delivery. This allows our network operations and site reliability teams to focus on running the network, rather than on managing tools and configurations, and thereby unlocks further innovation. Being able to modify the behavior of the data-center fabric in near real time, without touching device configurations, allows us to tune the operation of the fabric to best fit application and business requirements. To the three dimensions above, we recently added a new one: programmability. Apply RFC1925 Rule 12 to our network and protocols literally: "perfection has been reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Simplicity: Focus on finding the most minimalistic, simple, and modular approaches to infrastructure engineering.Independence: Refuse to develop a dependence on a single vendor or vendor-driven architecture (and hence avoid the inevitable forklift upgrades).Openness: Use community-based tools where possible. The three core principles that have guided our infrastructure design and our strategy are: Adding a new component, a new feature, or a new service without any traffic loss or architectural change is challenging. At LinkedIn, as we scaled our data center network, it became evident that we needed to provision and build networks not only as quickly as possible, but also with the most simple and minimalistic approaches possible - something that previously was not quite apparent to us. Operating a large-scale, rapidly growing network requires a philosophical change in how you plan, deploy, and operate your infrastructure. That’s a lot of work if one needs to do that for over 26 glyphs… □ Select Element > Overlap > Remove Overlap. To import an SVG file in FontForge, for every glyph, one has to: This is illustrated in the image below.įinally, in the “TTF Names” tab, if you’d like to be a good citizen of Earth and make your font publicly available, be sure to add the SIL Open Font License! But if one has a descender that’s greater than 20% of the height of the glyph, one will have to modify these settings. This will affect how the SVGs are imported! In my case, I did not need to change the settings as my SVGs were 120px in height, and the glyph was only 100px tall, which meant the baseline was exactly at the 100px line. By default, the em size of the font is 1000 units, with 80% of the height dedicated to the ascent, and 20% dedicated to the descent. Next, in the “General” tab, you can specify the dimensions of the font. ![]() Name For Humans is not displayed anywhere.Family Name is displayed in the font picker.Fontname is not displayed, but is used internally by PostScript. The FontForge documentation wasn’t that helpful for me, but from what I’ve learned: Now to actually create the font file! The first thing after creating a file in FontForge is to modify the font info data.Ĭonfusingly there are 3 different names a font can have. Also, FontForge has a command line interface, which allows me to automate this workflow! Creating a FontForge file I found that FontForge was the most robust of the lot, especially for this particular font that I’m creating. Nor did I want to pay €250 after 30 days for a hobby project… □ I also tried Glyphs, but I couldn’t figure out how to actually import an SVG. Below is an example of the output for BirdFont and Glyphr respectively: It’s not exactly a “What you see if what you get” experience. However, when I tried to export the font, I got weird glitches. I tried BirdFont and Glyphr Studio first since they looked appealing for a novice like myself. ![]() ![]() I initially tried a variety of font editors for Mac OS, including BirdFont, FontForge, Glyphr Studio, and Glyphs. stroke=#000).Īfter running my script, all SVGs will now consist only of paths. For my usage that is not a huge problem, since all my strokes will be black (i.e. Instead one has to specify a particular stroke colour to select. Svg-stroke-to-path SameStrokeColor 'stroke="#000"' svg/ *.svgĪnnoyingly Inkscape does not have a way to select only shapes that have strokes before running the “Stroke To Path” macro. So I’ve created a shell script called svg-stroke-to-path that can take in a set of SVG files, and convert all strokes to paths. Thankfully, Inkscape has a command line interface that allows me to do this automatically. I could have manually converted the strokes to paths in Sketch, but I prefer working with outlines for some portions of the font, so I wanted to find an automated way to convert these without losing the ability to change the outline later. This causes problems later in the process when importing the SVG files into FontForge. ![]() In my case, a lot of the elements in the font are actually line segments. This step depends on whether your font has strokes/lines instead of paths/polygons. # Export the slices in the sketch file as SVG to the folder "svg" $sketch_tool export slices MyFont.sketch -formats =svg -output =svg/ # Locate the SketchTool file sketch_app_dir = `mdfind kMDItemCFBundleIdentifier = '3' | head -n 1 ` sketch_tool = $sketch_app_dir/Contents/Resources/sketchtool/bin/sketchtool Sketch has a nice command line utility called SketchTool that can automate exports like so: For instance, each glyph in my sketch file is a “Slice”. Sketch has a neat concept called “Artboards” and “Slices” that make it easy to export selections in a single file, rather than having multiple SVG files all over the place on disk. Other people might be more comfortable with Inkscape, or some other vector graphics tool. How one actually designs the font is anyone’s preference, but I’m quite comfortable with Sketch’s tools.
![]() If it says "Renew Coverage" (the date shown will be in the past), you won't be able to upgrade that plugin until you WUP that plugin. The "Update Plan" column shows your WUP status. go to, navigate to your User Account and look at "My Products". It's pretty opaque figuring that out with Waves.Īctually, it is pretty simple. You won't get a hardtop, or an 8.4-inch touchscreen, the eight-speed automatic transmission, LED headlights, leather upholstery, a forward-facing camera, or any of the active safety gear.I can never figure out which Waves what stuff I can upgrade for free and which UI have to pay for? Sure, the Jeep is substantially cheaper in its base form – $43,875 – but you'll have to give up a whole lot of gear to maintain that price. It's because our Gladiator Mojave's as-tested price matches the hi-po F-150's starting price. You might be wondering why we brought up the Raptor. According to the EPA's website, you'll save $500 per year on fuel costs with the Gladiator, but we'd happily hand over all that extra coin for the added power and torque. And yet, the twin-turbocharged Ford F-150 Raptor nets 15 mpg city, 18 highway, and 16 combined. With just 285 horsepower, 260 pound-feet of torque, and an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 17 miles per gallon city, 22 highway, and 19 combined, the Gladiator Mojave is down 165 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque on a Ford Raptor. The other reason we'd opt for a different engine comes down to fuel economy. So yeah, Jeep, if you’re reading, let’s get on that. The Gladiator Mojave extends that lead, giving Jeep's pickup truck all the attitude and style of a Rubicon without sacrificing much in the way of on-road livability.Īnd if we’re making wishes, the Gladiator Mojave’s purpose makes it seem like an obvious choice for a 392 variant. This might be controversial, but the Gladiator was already our favorite member of the extended Wrangler family because of the way the longer wheelbase makes everyday life more tolerable. The Gladiator Mojave doesn't really add much to this formula, but hey, occasionally we need to remind brands that things are cool and they should keep doing them. But after a bit of work, there are few vehicles that can match the elemental driving experience of a roofless, doorless Jeep. ![]() Okay, that's a lie, because the doors are heavy as hell and you'll need two people to wrangle (pun intended) the available hardtop. We'll never get tired of yanking the roof and doors off a Jeep. And faced with washboard dirt trails, the Gladiator Mojave proved plenty happy to bound over them at speed, its uprated shocks and 33-inch tires absorbing the worst of the abuse. The Mojave-specific shocks and the Gladiator's longer wheelbase made this inarguably the most stable member of the broader Wrangler family – on paved roads, we experienced little of the solid-axle wobble we've come to associate with Jeep's most traditional vehicles. There are practical benefits to these changes, too. From the orange accents, to the meaty 2.5-inch Fox shocks, to specific drivetrain changes designed specifically for the Mojave's desert-running mission, this Gladiator feels like a long-overdue complement to Jeep's off-road enthusiast lineup. With respect to Jeep's popular Rubicon and Trailhawk trims, we're all-in on the Mojave-specific details. We like it a whole lot, but between purpose and price, it's a little hard to understand the Mojave's role. At the same time, the Gladiator Mojave suffers from some of the same ills as the Gladiator Rubicon. Unfortunately, it only has the hardware for the first two items, not the third. This is a desert runner, a thing designed for dust, dunes, and high speeds. Rather than a vehicle designed solely for crawling up rocky outcroppings, it takes a page out of the Ram TRX's book. ![]() That's why the Jeep Gladiator Mojave is such a breath of fresh air. ![]() That period marked a great achievement for the company as it touted itself as a virtual shopping mall. With the gradual reopening of physical stores, people are having fun doing their shopping offline.Īt the peak of the pandemic, Pinterest added over 100 million active users. Pinterest has a lot of products that focus more on ecommerce, and this attracted millions of shoppers to the platform at the peak of the pandemic. People did virtually all their shopping online at the peak of the COVID outbreak. ![]() ![]() The social media platform lost some 34 million active users overall after a steady growth stretching two periods. In Q2, the numbers were down 24 million MAUs before that. In the quarter before the last, Pinterest’s MAU dropped to 444 million in Q3, down by 10 million on the previous reporting period. What this means is that Pinterest is not able to keep hold of its users though it has been adding some new products and features lately. Of course, people are beginning to look elsewhere for their shopping since most countries have relaxed their lockdown rules, losing 47 million users is a huge cause for worry. While Pinterest is one of the most visited social media platforms online, the fact that it lost a whopping 47 million users in Q4 is something to worry about. This shows a decline of 47 million active users throughout 2021. The chart below shows that Pinterest’s monthly active user count dropped from 478 million at the start of 2021, to 431 million in the current quarter. A report that covered Pinterest’s performance in Q4 2021, showed that it is the third consecutive time this is happening. Once again, Pinterest’s monthly active user count is experiencing a downward spiral for the third consecutive quarter. That probably explains why a platform like Pinterest that benefited largely from online shopping at the peak of the pandemic is now beginning to experience a decline in patronage. The COVID-19 pandemic is probably going to hang around for a long time. People all around the world seem to have concluded that things may never go back to being the way they used to be. ![]() Internet browsing tracking (potential privacy issues), displaying of unwanted ads, redirects to shady websites, loss of private information. ![]() The startup grind is often caused by good intentions. First, accept that whatever you’re working towards may ultimately fail. Luckily, these are all problems that are possible to solve. Ultimately, burnout is caused by expectations being unreasonable, being prevented from doing your job because other people are dropping the ball and an overall lack of accountability. We’re all adults here - seems simple enough, right? There are a few things that can make this harder to swallow. Since fighting against the current is a fool’s errand you’ll need to play the game differently to win it. ![]() The first step is to realize that you’re never done. Here are six things you can do to make burnout a thing of the past. That said, breaking habits is hard, and being disciplined about this can be nearly impossible. The answer to that question is here in this post.Īnd, believe it or not, their approach is surprisingly simple and also remarkably effective. “WTF are these people doing that I’m not doing, that I’m not?” People more experienced than I was were dealing with problems many magnitudes more difficult than mine and were more effective, successful and surprisingly less stressed out than I was. When this happened to me, I looked around to see what other people were doing and what I saw horrified me. In times like these putting your blinders on and powering through seems like the only option. Do whatever it takes to get to the other side of it. When you’re inexperienced it’s easy to try to power through it. It was a huge day and everyone was delighted, relaxed and calm.Īnd like clockwork, after a couple short weeks - we raise our heads up and realize we’re in the midst of the startup grind all over again. I’m pretty excited for this milestone to be behind us, though.įast forward a few days - the milestone passed and it was a huge success. He paused, nodded his head and agreed with me. Why? As soon as this launch is finished we will immediately need to start fixing the corners that we cut to hit this deadline, we’ll have a whole lot of users we will need to support in the process, and there will be a variety of new milestones we’re all going to be focused on in the process. My response to him nearly ruined his day… Ken, I can’t wait for this big launch to finally be done. People were laser-focused and a coworker told me: There was about a week until the day we had all been working towards. We were about to launch an initiative that had been underway for about three months. There was a big milestone at the last company I was working for. We’ve all been there… Here’s what happened the last time I was in this mode. When “Crunch-time” - is another way to say “All the Time” Sound familiar? Welcome to the startup grind. Somehow in the chaos that entails we find ourselves so focused on the urgent fire in front of us that we lose all perspective of the forest through the trees. Hours drag on until everything is fuzzy and big chunks of our lives have ticked away. What’s scary is that it can be like a drug. It’s in those moments where we’re able to prove that we’re made of something a little more than human. Those minutes where my back is against the wall, I’m fighting the clock and everything is on the line. As an entrepreneur - I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t live for the moments that are crunch-time. It takes an intense laser-focus to move mountains, achieve the impossible and prove everyone wrong.
